Benjamin Franklin Hosts The Constitutional
Convention
on May 13, 1787 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Benjamin Franklin's failing health did not prevent him from becoming the oldest delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787. On May 13 - the day before the Convention began - George Washington arrived in Philadelphia and visted Franklin at his Market Street home. Although Benjamin Franklin did not attend the first day of the Convention, he made certain that the delegates from Pennsylvania would nominate Washington as its president.

Benjamin Franklin initially did not see the need for a new U.S. Constitution, believing as late as 1786 that the Articles of Confederation provided a sufficient basis for the Nation's government. However, after learning of other statemen's plans to draft a new document, Benjamin Franklin changed his mind and wished them success. Then, on March 28, 1787, Franklin was himself appointed to the upcoming Constitutional Convention.

Benjamin Rush, one of Franklin's associates, stated that Franklin constantly exhibited "a spectacle of transcendent benevolence by attending the Convention punctually, and even taking part in its business and deliberations." AS the elder statesman in the proceedings, Franklin gently urged his younger, hot-tempered counterparts to "consult, not to contend, with each other;...harmony and union are extremely necessary to give weight to our councils, and render them effectual in promoting and securing the common good."

The Historic U.S. stamp on this Cover was issued in 1938 and depicts the old Colonial Court House in Williamsburg, Virginia, the colony's capitol from 1699 to 1780, before moving to Richmond. The Cover is postmarked on May 13, the anniversary of Franklin's hosting of the Constitutional Convention.
