Franklin's Election as President of the
Academy of Pennsylvania
on Nov 13, 1749 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
A man of great intellectual curiosity, Benjamin Franklin was a firm believer in education. In 1749, he determined that Pennsylvania should have an academy the caliber of Yale, Harvard, and Princeton (then the College of New Jersey). To make this dream a reality, he assembled a group of friends and benefactors, and published a pamphlet entitled, "Proposals Relating to the Education of Youth in Pennsylvania."

In this publication, Franklin envisioned the most liberal institution of higher learning in colonial America. He proposed that the academy be operated by caring individuals who would not only "encourage and countenance the youth," but also help them get establish professionally after graduation. Franklin also urged that students eat healthy foods and "be frequently exercised in running, leaping, wrestling, and swimming," The subject matter would include English, drawing, mathematics, astronomy, history, agriculture, commerce, even mechanics - "that art by which weak men perform such wonders." Through this innovative, varied curriculum, Franklin sought to foster in each student "that benignity of mind which shows itself in searching for and seizing every opportunity to serve and oblige...the foundation of what is called good breeding."

Once again, a Franklin invention came to fruition. On November 13, 1749, he was appointed president of the academy. Today, this venerable Ivy League institution is known as the University of Pennsylvania.

The historic U.S. stamp on this Cover was issued in 1955 and commemorates the first of the land grant colleges. The Cover is postmarked on November 13, the exact anniversary of Franklin's election as the president of the Academy of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
