Honors Franklin's Experiment
with Electricity
on June 21, 1752 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Benjamin Franklin is revered for his wise adages and his fervent commitment to American freedom. However, his early experiments and discoveries in electricity warrant equal praise. He made world history in June 1752, when his famous kite experiment proved that lightning was composed of electricity.
A timeless reader, Franklin was especially fascinated in 1746 to learn that Pieter Van Musschenbroek of Leyden began storing sparks in what became known as "Leyden Jars." In 1750, Franklin foreshadowed his impending creation of the lightning rod, which he designed to prevent dwellings and ships from destruction by lightning. He imagined a "rod of iron eight to ten feet in length, sharpened gradually to a point like a needle." He hypothesized this creation would enable electrical fire to "be drawn out of a cloud silently, before it could come near enough to strike."

Franklin initially planned to test his theory on a spire which was to be built atop Christ Church in Philadelphia. However, he suddenly realized that an ordinary kite would be an equally effective device. One day, Franklin and his son, William, took a kite onto an open field during a thunderstorm. As the inventor had predicted, a bolt of lightning struck the wire, moved down the string, and caused a spark on a metal key attached to a wire. Franklin was unaware that the French had made the same discovery only a month before and justifiably rejoiced at his scientific achievement.

The historic U.S. stamp on this Cover was issued in 1956 and depicts a famous painting entitled "Franklin Taking Electricity from the Sky." The Cover is postmarked on June 21, the anniversary of Benjamin Franklin's famous experiment with electricity in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
