Benjamin Franklin Starting His
First Print Shop
on July 14, 1730 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
An avid reader since childhood, Benjamin Franklin eagerly sought the pleasures of the mind and the company of fellow intellectuals. "I never went out a-fishing or shooting," he said, instead "a book sometimes debauched me from my work." And it wasn't long after his arrival in Philadelphia that the young apprentice printer from Boston decided to borrow some money from friends and start a new venture. Thus, on July 14,1730, Franklin became the sole proprietor of his own printing business.

Franklin's first employer in Philadelphia was Samuel Keimer, an eccentric and short-tempered newcomer to the printing profession. Although Keimer boasted of great prospects, he had little to offer Franklin other than a sparsely-appointed shop...and the opportunity to prove himself. After a brief sojourn in London, Franklin returned to Philadelphia and became Keimer's foreman. Before long, Franklin realized that Keimer had hired him merely to train his "raw, cheap hands" - and intended to dismiss Franklin once his services were no longer needed.

Recognizing that Keimer lacked the necessary ambition and equipment for success, Franklin and a co-worker, Hugh Meredith, resigned to open a new printing shop with the financial backing of Meredith's father. The two purchased Keimer's fledgling newspaper, the Pennsylvania Gazette, and turned it into a successful vehicle for Franklin's writing talents. However, things did not turn out as planned. Franklin had to perform extra duties while Meredith"was often seen drunk in the streets, and playing at low games in alehouses, much to our discredit." Fortunately, Meredith voluntarily sold out his interest and the partnership was dissolved amicably...and Franklin became the master printer in Philadelphia, the most thriving city in North America.

The historic U.S. stamp on this Cover was issued in 1939 and depicts the first U.S. printing press. The Cover is Postmarked on July 14, the exact anniversary of the date Franklin started his own printing business in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
