Franklin's Buriel
in Philadelphia, Pa on Apr 21, 1790.
An estimated 20,000 people met outside the Pennsylvania State House in Philadelphia on April 21, 1790, the day Benjamin Franklin was buried. It was the largest single gathering this city had ever known - a fitting tribute to the memory of its greatest citizen. Franklin had arrived in Philadelphia a struggling teen-aged printer, and ended his life as a respected inventer, scientist, author, and statesman.

Franklin's many accomplishments were reflected in the long procession to the burial ground at Christ Church. Participants included members of the Supreme Executive Council, of which he was president...the Philosophical Society, which he founded...the College of Philadelphia, which he helped to create... as well as printers, government officers, clergymen, and many dear friends. As Franklin's body was lowered next to his wife's, the crowd was stirred by a funeral salute by the Pennsylvania militia artillery - which was also founded by Franklin.

Count Mirabeau of Paris stated, "antiquity would have raised altars to this mighty genius, who, to the advantage of mankind, was able to restain alike thunderbolts and tyrants." Thomas Jefferson considered Franklin "the greatest man and ornament of the age and country in which he lived." But perhaps President George Washington said it best of all, in a letter he once wrote to Franklin: "If to be venerated for benevolence, if to be beloved for philanthropy can gratify the human mind, you must have the pleasing consolation to know that you have not lived in vain."

The Historic U.S. stamp on this Cover was issued in 1974 and depicts Independence Hall, the site of the Second Continental Congress. The Cover is postmarked on April 21, the exact anniversary of the day Franklin was buried in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
