Franklin's Marriage to
Deborah Read at Christ Church
on Sep 1, 1730 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Benjamin Franklin scrupulously avoided marriage while he was busy launching his printing career in Philadelphia. Believing that love was for "poets and men of leisure," he preferred the life of a single man about town. However, on September 1, 1730, Franklin settled down to mariage with longtime acquaintance, Deborah Read. With characteristic wit, Franklin finally reasoned that "a single man resembles the odd half of a pair of scissors."

Franklin first meet Deborah in 1724, when he was 18 years old and had recently arrived in Philadelphia. Finding room and board at the Reads', Franklin soon began to court Deborah. Her mother believed they were too young and insisted that they end the relationship, but both mother and daughter continued to correspond with Franklin.

Six years later, Franklin revisted Deborah and was saddened to see that she was "generally dejected, seldom cheerful, and avoided company." Her new husband, a man named Rogers, had run away from his creditors to the West Indies, where he was presumed dead. Deborah was now left with considerable debt, as well as the uncertainty of her husband's return. However, Franklin was undaunted, and proudly "took her to wife" in a simple exchange of vows at Christ Church.

As a wife, Deborah took little interest in Franklin's many studies and activities. Yet Franklin appreaciated her common sense, praising her as "a good and faithful helpmate. We throve together, and have ever mutually endeavoured to make each other happy." Thus, with a successful marriage providing the stability he needed, Franklin could turn his whole mind and will back to work.

The historic U.S. stamp on this Cover was issued in 1955 and depicts a portrait of Franklin by J.S. Duplessis. The Cover is Postmarked on September 1, the exact anniversary of Benjamin Franklin's marriage to Deborah Read in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
