Franklin's Proposing
the American Philosophical Society
on May 14, 1743 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Benjamin Franklin was always eager to share his intellectual curiosity with others. He formed the Junto, a discussion group composed of Philadelphia professionals, in 1727. Then on May 14, 1743, Franklin proposed an intercolonial version of the Junto in hopes of uniting isolated colonists through their common interests. This group became the American Philosophical Society.

At this point in history, Franklin saw that "the first drudgery of settling new colonies" was just about over. He maintained that the American people finally had "leisure to cultivate the finer arts and improve the common stock of knowledge." Therefore, Franklin assembled a group of ten members - including a president, treasurer, physician, botanist, chemist, mathematician, mechanician, geographer, philosopher, and himself as secretary.

The American Philosophical Society first met in April of 1744. Unfortunately, Franklin was soon chagrined to discover that the Society's first members were "very idle gentlemen." Meetings were irregular, recorded minutes were spotty, and discipline among the members was generally lacking. However, the Society proved noteworthy for at least one reason - it provided Franklin with a forum to write the first account of his famous "Franklin stove," an innovation in home heating that remains in use today.

The historic U.S. stamp on this Cover was issued in 1962 to honor high education. The Cover is postmarked on May 14, the exact anniversary of the day Benjamin Franklin proposed the American Philosophical Society in Philadephia, Pennsylvania.
