Franklin's Establishment
of a Philanthropic Legacy
on June 23, 1789 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Benjamin Franklin's last will and testament was almost one year old when he added a long addition to the document on June 23, 1789. Franklin then outlined a large and profound gift - a philanthropic plan to last 200 years, which became known as the Benjamin Franklin Fund.

This great legacy was financed by the salary Franklin had earned and saved from his position as President of Pennsylvania. He gave his home cities of Boston and Philadelphia each one thousand pounds, to be used for loans to "such married artificers, under the age of twenty-five years, as have served an apprenticeship in the said town." Borrowers were to pay five percent interest and repay one-tenth of the principal annually, which would then be loaned out again. Franklin knew all too well the long-range value of loans, for he had become successful after receiving a loan when he was a young, married man.

To ensure the most efficient use of his legacy, Franklin expressed his desire that the money not "be diverted to other purposes." The fund proved enormously successful, growing to $391,000 in Boston at the end of its 100th year. A portion of these funds was used by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie to found Franklin Union, a technical school. By its 200th year, the fund was worth millions of dollars - the greatest gift ever awarded by a philosopher. Although the rise of industrialism stemmed the tide of apprenticeship - on which Franklin based his legacy - the Fund remains a living testament to his financial acumen.

The Franklin stamp on this Cover was issued in 1985. The Cover is Postmarked on June 23, the exact anniversary of the day Benjamin Franklin established his philanthropic legacy, the Benjamin Franklin Fund, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
