Marks Franklin's Death
on Apr 17, 1790 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
On July 17, 1788, Benjamin Franklin signed his last will and testament. The prudent statesman knew he should have his affairs in order, for he was suffering from a variety of ailments that often accompany a ripe old age.

Though bedridden and uncomfortable, Franklin still followed the latest news. He was particularly interested in the simmering revolution in France, a nation which occupied a special place in his heart, and was delighted when Thomas Jefferson visted him in Philadelphia after spending time in France. Jefferson recalled how Franklin eagerly questioned him "with a rapidity and animation almost too much for his strength." Franklin then entrusted a sample of his autobiography to Jefferson.

It was to Jefferson that Franklin wrote his last letter, on April 8, 1790. One day, Franklin begged his daughter to make up his bed so he could die in a decent manner. She tried to dismiss his request, telling Franklin be might recover, to which he grunted, "I hope not!" Several day later, when his physician advised that he change his position in bed to help him breath easier, Franklin acerbically replied, "a dying man can do nothing easy."

Finally, at approximately 11:00 P.M. on April 17, 1790, Benjamin Franklin died peacefully while his beloved grandsons, Temple and Benjamin, sat by his side. He was 84 years old. The world had lost a great inventer, statesman, and philosopher...and a loyal friend.

The historic U.S. stamp on this Cover was issued in 1938 and depicts the bust of a statue of Franklin by James Earle Fraser. The Cover is postmarked on April 17, the exact anniversary of Benjamin Franklin's death in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
