Franklin's Appointment to
Prepare the Declaration of Independence
on Jun 10, 1776 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
On June 10, 1776, Congress appointed a committee of five men to design a Declaration of Independence: Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston (the latter two men soon left the project). Jefferson wrote the first draft and submitted it to Adams and Franklin for their comments.

Though Franklin did not change much of Jefferson's orginal document, he offered several alterations which have remained among the most significant phrases in American history. The sentence where Jefferson warned that foreign mercenaries set out to "deluge us in blood," Franklin changed slightly to " destroy us" Jefferson's passage, "reduce them to arbitary power" became "reduce them under absolute despotism." But Franklin's greatest contribution was the rephrasing of a sentence which orginally read, "We hold these truths to be sacred and undeniable." Franklin replaced the last three words with "self-evident."

One day, Franklin noticed that Jefferson took these changes as a personal affront. Franklin told him consolingly, "I have made it a rule, whenever in my power, to avoid becoming the draftsman of papers to be reviewed by a public body." He went on to tell Jefferson an anecdote about his friend, a hatter named John Thompson, whose first promotional sign read, "John Thompson, hatter, makes and sells hats for ready money." Eventually - according to Franklin - several well-meaning people suggested the deletion of certain words from the sign. Thompson took all their suggestions and ended up with a sign that read simply, "John Thompson" next to a figure of a hat.

Jefferson was amused. Franklin, the great diplomat, had broken the ice once again.

The Historic U.S. stamp on this Cover was issued in 1974 and depicts a quote from the Declaration of Independence. The Cover is postmarked on June 10, the exact anniversary of Franklin's appointment to prepare the Declaration of Independence.
