Franklin's Reception
by King Louis XVI of France
on Mar 20, 1778 in Paris, France.
To celebrate France's commitment to the American colonies in the Revolutionary War, foreign minister Vergennes held a ball in the Palace of Versailles - home of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette. The guest of honor on the evening of March 20, 1778 were the five American ministers who had participated in the negotiations...but only one of them attracted the attention of the crowd.

At age 72, Benjamin Franklin was a folk hero to the French people. His affable manner, good-natured wit, and often disheveled appearance had become legendary during his peace negotiation with France. Ever the shrewd politician, Franklin arrived at court in the same rumpled attire which had endeared him to the masses - brown suit, white hat tucked under one arm, spectacles perched on his nose, white hair flowing loosely. (His head was too large for the wig he almost purchased for the occasion.)

When the venerable sage bowed courteously before him, the King was initially taken aback by his costume. Then he sincerely told Franklin. "Firmly assure Congress of my friendship. I hope that this will be for the good of the two nations." The two acknowledged one another's cooperation, then Franklin said, "Your Majesty may count on the gratitude of Congress andits faithful observance of the pledges it now takes." The attending crowd broke with court etiquette and cheered, "The Apostle of Liberty. Citizen Franklin!"
