Franklin's Appointment
to the Second Continental Congress
on May 6, 1775 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Benjamin Franklin was exhausted on the morning of May 6, 1775. The previous night, he had returned to Philadelphia by boat after his long stay in Great Britian. Then a startling bit of news suddenly awakened him: the Pennsylvania Assembly appointed Franklin deputy to the Second Continental Congress, which was to meet in four days.

Franklin became caught up in the spirt that was sweeping Philadelphia. The Revolutionary War had just begun and men rushed to enlist in the fight for freedom. Delegates from other colonies were greeted by parades and ceremonies. Franklin wrote to his friend, David Hartley, that he had "the pleasure to learn that there is the most perfect unanimity throughout the colonies."

Yet Franklin was no longer a young man. He was now 70 years of age - the oldest member of the Continental Congress - and looking forward to a quiet life at his home on Market Street. To ease his responsibilities, Franklin made his confidant, Joseph Galloway, his Congressional right-hand man.

Little did Franklin know that he was headed for one of the busiest periods of his life - a period in which he would literally end a war and align major world powers through his patient but shrewed diplomacy. The man known to so many nations as an innovator in science and letters was about to become the consummate statesman.

The historic U.S. stamp on this Cover was issued in 1972 to honor Franklin's many achievements. The Cover is Postmarked on May 6, the exact anniversary of Franklin's appointment to the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
