Franklin's Departure
From Britian Bound for America
on Mar 20, 1775 in London, England
On March 20, 1775 Benjamin Franklin boarded the Pennsylvania packet and set sail to return to Philadelphia. He had enjoyed living in Great Britian, where he represented American colonial interests to Parliament...but such interest now posed a threat to the empire of King George III. Anti-American sentiment was rampant in Britian, and war was imminent...despite Franklin's many attempts to prevent it.

Franklin had spent the previous day with his friend, Joseph Priestley, pondering the brewing conflict with tears streaming down his cheeks. His fellow negotiator, Dr. John Fothergill, had warned Franklin to distrust the "specious pretenses" of the British, whose sole aim was "to get a larger field on which to fatten a herd of worthless parasites." Though Franklin was confident that the Colonies would win a revolution, he nonetheless anticipated that the war would last a decade...and that he would not be alive to savor the victory.

His heavy heart notwithstanding, Franklin set sail for the Colonies, where his unique diplomatic talents were most needed. He was accompanied by his grandson, Temple. For the first half of the six-week journey, Franklin wrote his son a letter describing his secert dealings with Great Britian. Later, he busied himself with another project: studing the Gulf Stream.

On May 5, Franklin arrived in Philadelphia. The first shots of the Revolutionary War had already been fired in Lexington and Concord...and Franklin was about to be appointed to the Second Continental Congress.

The Cover is postmarked on March 20, the exact anniversary of Benjamin Franklin left Britian bound for America.
