Franklin's Birth
on Jan 17, 1706 in Boston, Massachusetts
On January 17, 1706, Benjamin Franklin was born at his parent's home on Milk Street in Boston, Massachusetts. The house contained four rooms - only one of which had a fireplace or any natural light. Heat and food were precious commodities in the Franklin household - but inspiration was abundant.

Benjamin was the youngest son of candlemaker Josiah Franklin and his second wife, the former Abiah Folger. Josiah had been raised in England with his elder brothers - Thomas, John, and Benjamin - during Reformation times. He hoped that his religious passion would rub off on Ben...but instead, the young man inherited his father's resourcefulness and intellectual curiosity. He also shared his Uncle Benjamin's interest in politics and community issues.

Josiah Franklin was - to his son - a "visible saint." A mechanical genius who played violin for enjoyment, Josiah influenced Ben through his "sound understanding and solid judgement in prudential matters," as well as his passon for introducing "some ingenious or useful topic for discourse, which might tend to improve the minds of his children."

Abiah Franklin was too busy to take part in her family's intellectual discussions. The hard-working mother of ten of Josiah's 17 children, she had a crowded house-hold to keep her occupied. A "discreet and virtuous woman" (according to Ben), Abiah was the daughter of Peter Folger, a man of many talents - interpreter, teacher, writer, weaver, miller, and champion of religious freedom. Folger's combination of political idealism and expertise in several disciplines no doubt inspired his famous grandson - a man who grew to discover electricity, write insightful prose, and affect diplomatic relations for the U.S. around the world.

The historic U.S. stamp on this Cover was issued in 1927 and depicts a portrait bust of Franklin by Houdon. The Cover is Postmarked on January 17, the exact anniversary of Benjamin Franklin's birth in Boston, Massachusetts.
