Franklin's Arrival
in Paris, France
on Dec 20, 1776
In 1776, the Revolutionary War continued to rage, despite a newly-signed Declaration of Independance. The Continental Congress soon realized that an alliance with France - one of Great Britian's most powerful adversaries - could mean the difference between victory and defeat in the War. In pursuit of peace, the U.S. sent a statesman of unmatched diplomacy, charm, and grace...a man nearing the age of 70 whose vigor far exceeded that of his contemporaries. That man was Benjamin Franklin.

On December 3, 1776 - weak and tired from a turbulent boat journey - Franklin arrived in the French village of Auray. Once rested, he set out for Paris. By the time he arrived on December 20, Franklin realized his reputation had preceded him.

The French people were already well aware of Franklin's wit, having read his Poor Richard's Almanack with great interest. They were even more charmed by Franklin in person, because of his lack of pretention in both dress and manner. The Comte de Segur wrote, "it was as though classic simplicity, the figure of a thinker of the time of Plato, or a republican of the age of Cato or Fabius had suddenly been brought by magic into our effeminate and slavish age, the eighteenth century."

Ben Franklin became a celebrity whose adages became legend, and whose face appeared on portraits and jewelry. Even John Adams - who disdained Franklin's affable style - admitted that Franklin's in France "was more universal than that of Leibnitz or Newton, Frederick, or Voltaire."

Wha Franklin restored, in fact, was world peace. On February 6, 1778, the U.S. and France signed a pact of alliance. That year, Benjamin Franklin became Minister to France. In 1783, he helped to draft the Treaty of Paris - the historic document that ended the revolutionary War.

The Cover is postmarked on December 20, the exact anniversary of Benjamin Franklin's arrival in Paris, France.
