Info From First Page of Book - Benjamin Franklin facts
Benjamin Franklin combined the persuasive charm of a master storyteller with the shrewd diplomacy of a master statesman...the ready wit of an author with the analytical mind of a scientist.
Indeed, Franklin wore many "hats" during his long and productive life - accomplishing more in his seventies than most men do in their twenties.
Today, this prolific genius is still revered as one of the greatest American patriots of all times.
As an unofficial ambassador for the colonies during pre-Revolutionary times, Franklin influenced the British to repeal the Stamp Act.
He later sharpened his diplomatic skills as minister of France, where he was received by Louis XVI - and won that nation's friendship and invaluable support in times of peace and war.
Yet, with all of Franklin's achievements as a statesman, he is perhaps best known for his Poor Richard's Almanack (1733-1758), the source of many proverbs still widely-quoted today.
"A penny saved is a penny earned"..."God helps them that help themselves"..."Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise"...these are just a few of the memorable adages which sprang -
seemingly effortlessly - from Franklin's pen.
Like his famous witticisms, Franklin's early experiments with electricity are well-known. But few know that Franklin is also acknowledged by many historians as the first
to publish a newspaper cartoon...the founder of the first city hospital and the first subscription library in the American colonies...the inventer of bifocal lenses...and the first to study the movement of the Gulf Stream
in the Atlantic Ocean. The thrifty Franklin was also the prim force behind increased efficiency in several areas - from innovations in home heating to the operation of the colonial
postal service. In fact, the Postal Department had a unique way to commemorate Franklin's achievement - he was honored on the first US stamp.
Thomas Jefferson hailed Franklin as "the greatest man and ornament of the age and country in which he lived." And President George Washington wrote to Franklin: "If to be
venerated for benevolence, if to be admired for talents, if to be esteemed for patriotism, if to be beloved for philanthropy can gratify the human mind, you must have the pleasing consolation
to know that you have not lived in vain." When Franklin died on April 17, 1790, about 20,000 people attended the funeral - obviously in agreeement with Washington anf Jefferson.
