November 25, 1963, dawned bright and clear in Washington, DC. By mid-morning, millions of the city's residents had gathered in the streets, for it was the day of President John F Kennedy's funeral. Across the land, other Americans sat in front of their television sets. Profound grief and a mood of stunned silence had settled on the nation.

Shortly before 11:00 AM, Kennedy's casket was lifted from its position in the rotunda of the U.S. capitol, carried down the capitol steps, and placed on the black open carriage. As the funeral cortege proceeded towards the White House, a riderless horse followed the carriage. The stirrups at the animal sides contain a pair of boots that had been reversed - a symbol of a fallen leader. Upon reaching the White House, many people in the procession left their cars to walk the eight blocks to Saint Matthew's Cathedral. Following on foot behind the casket were the late President's widow, President and Mrs. Lyndon Johnson, and over 200 leaders representing the world's great nations.

A funeral mass was said by Richard Cardinal Cushing, the Archbishop of Boston. Then the funeral procession resumed as Kennedy's casket was carried to Arlington National Cemetery, three miles away. With Cardinal Cushing still leading the service, prayers were said, and the flag that covered the coffin was presented to Kennedy's widow. Jacqueline Kennedy lit an eternal flame at the foot of her husband's grave, then the crowds slowly drifted away.

The historic mint stamp feature on this panel was issued in 1964 in memory of John F. Kennedy. This Panel is postmarked on November 25, the exact anniversary of JFK's funeral.
