John F. Kennedy was elected to the United States Senate on November 4, 1952 - the same year that Dwight D. Eisenhower won his first term as President. Even though Eisenhower carried Massachusetts in a landslide, Kennedy achieved an upset victory against the incumbent, Senator Henry Cabot Lodge. He won the election by a mere 70,000 volts.

Prior to the Senate campaign, Kennedy served three terms in the House of Representatives. Eager to take on a larger share of national responsibility, Kennedy announced that he was seeking a Senate seat in April of 1952. Lodge, his popular opponent, was strongly favored to win the election.

With his Brother Robert serving as campaign manager, John F Kennedy traveled throughout Massachusetts meeting and greeting large numbers of people. Epecially valuable allies were Kennedy's mother and sisters, who held a series of teas that were attended by thousands of women. By contrast, Lodge, underestimated the energy and political skill of Kennedy and his family, began his campaign at a slow pace.

After the polls closed on November 4, Kennedy's supporters waited anxiously as the election returns came in. As the night wore on, it was clear the race would be close. Midnight passed, and for a brief perion the vote count suggested Lodge would be reelected. By daybreak, however, Kennedy's victory was assured, and at 7:35 AM Massachusett's newest Senator rejoiced when he received a telegram of concession from Lodge.

The historic mint stamp on this Panel was issued in 1950 and depicts the United States Capitol. This Panel is postmarked on November 4, the exact anniversary of John F Kennedy's election to the U.S. Senate.
