John F. Kennedy won elections to the House of Representatives from the 11th Congressional District of Massachusetts on November 5, 1946. Although this election marked his official entry into politics, Kennedys victory of had really come five months earlier when he won the Democratic primary. In this heavily Democratic district, which included part of Boston, winning the nomination was tantamount to a victory in the general election.

The race to win the Democratic nomination had been difficult. Kennedy entered the contest with no experience in the turbulent world of Boston politics. To make matters worse, he was young - just 28 - and he was an outsider. Although he was born in nearby Brookline, Massachusetts, he spent his youth in Bronxville, New York. During the campaign, his residence was Boston's Bellevue Hotel - the fact that drew "carpetbagger charges" from his opponents.

Determined to overcome these drawbacks, Kennedy enter the race before any of his nine opponents and build up a large any effective political organization. Friends from college and the navy, members of his family, and young people who had grown up in the district pitched in to help. Charming and articulate, Kennedy proved to have a vote-winning personality. When the primary date arrived, he won 42 percent of the vote - an extraordinary result for a ten-man race.

The historic mint stamp featured on this Panel was issued in 1962 and depicts Sam Rayburn, Speaker of the House of Representatives when JFK was elected to Congress. This panel is postmarked on November 5, the exact anniversary of JFK election to Congress.
