It was November 8, 1960, and the long Presidential campaign had come to an end. The American people had listen to Richard Nixon's and John Kennedy's views on the issues in an unprecedented series of television debates. They had seen the candidates' media campaigns, and some had observed them in person at their many public appearances. Now it was time to choose the next President of the United States.

On the morning of election day, John Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline voted in Boston and then return to the Kennedy family compound on Cape Cod to rest. That evening, the couple gathered with friends and family to watch the election returns. The assembled group cheered when the television networks reported that Kennedy had carried Connecticut, one of the first States to calls its polls. There euphoria subsided when it became apparent that the race in many Midwestern states was much closer than expected. As the evening wore on, the battle seesawed back and forth. Finally, Kennedy went to bed at 4 AM, hopeful but unsure of victory.

When Kennedy awoke the next morning, it was clear that he had captured enough states and to assure a win in the electoral college. Nixon's concession speech and telegram of congratulations were delivered shortly after noon. What Jacqueline Kennedy described as 'the longest night in history' was over, and John F. Kennedy was elected the 35th President of the United States.

This historic mint stamp featured on this Panel was issued in 1950 as part of the National Capital Sesquicentennial Series and depicts the White House. This panel is postmarked on November 8, the exact anniversary of JFK's election to the Presidency.
