A crowd of 3000 persons broke through police lines and nearly crushed the bride, Ms. Jacqueline Lee Bouvier, when she arrived for her marriage here this morning to United States Senator John Fitzgerald Kennedy of Massachusetts." Thus began the New York Times account of John and Jacqueline Kennedy's marriage on September 12, 1953, in Newport, Rhode Island.

Jack Kennedy met his bride at a dinner party in Washington, DC in 1951. A beautiful and cultured young woman, Jacqueline Bouvier was the daughter of a successful Wall Street broker. She had attended Vassar college in the Sorbonne in Paris before graduating from George Washington University. After receiving her degree, "Jackie," as she was known, worked as an inquiring photographer for the Washington Times-Herald.

The wedding was a gala event with a guest list that included many noted political figures. Some 800 friends crowded into Saint Mary's Church to witness a nuptial mass celebrated by the Archbishop of Boston, Richard J. Cushing. Robert Kennedy was John Kennedy's best man, and Jacqueline sister, Lee, was the matron of honor. After the ceremony, more than 1,200 people attended a reception at Hammersmith farms, a 300-acre estate in Newport owned by the bride's family. Overlooking Narragansett Bay, Hammersmith farms provided a stunning setting for one of the year's most important and exciting social events.

The historic U.S. mint stamp on this Panel depictsa Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Island colony. It was issued in 1936 to honor the 300th anniversary of the colony's settlement. The panel was postmarked on September 12 in Newport, Rhode Island, the exact anniversary and site of John and Jacquelyn Kennedy's wedding.
