The Democratic Senator from Massachusetts, John F. Kennedy, strode into the Senate Caucus Room up in the U.S. Capitol on January 2 1960, and began a historic press conference. He stepped up to a microphone at exactly 12:30 PM and declared, "I am announcing, today, my candidacy for the presidency of the United States."

In seeking the nation's highest office, the handsome, young Senator faced a formidable task. John Kennedy was 42 years old at the time he made his announcement. No one that young had ever been elected President. Moreover, he was a Roman Catholic, and no one of that faith had ever served as Chief Executive.

To overcome the dual barriers of age and religion, Kennedy had to convince leaders of the Democratic party that he could win votes. To secure the confidence of his party, he would have to make a strong showing in the primaries, the state elections held throughout the spring to select delegates to the Democratic nominating convention.

Although he faced an uphill struggle, Kennedy spoke to the reporters at the press conference with assurance. 'In the past forty months, I have toured every state in the Union and I have talked to Democrats and all walks of life," he said. "My candidacy is therefore based on the conviction of that I can win both the nomination and the election. Determined and confident, John F. Kennedy had begun his long and difficult campaign to become the 35th president of United States.

The historic mint stamp featured on this Panel depicts an American flag and the words "Register - Vote." It was issued in 1964 to encourage citizens to exercise their right to vote.. This panel is postmarked January 2, the exact anniversary of the day John F. Kennedy announced his bid for the presidency.
