During the Presidential campaign of 1960, John F. Kennedy concluded a hard day of campaigning with a late night visit to the University of Michigan. To the thousands of students who had stayed up past midnight to hear his message, Kennedy issued a stirring challenge:" How many of you are willing to spend... years in Africa or Latin America or Asia working for the United States and working for freedom? How many of you who are going to be doctors are willing to spend your days in Ghana...?"

The strong response to his challenge resolved Kennedy's conviction to establish an International Service program if he were elected. Thus, on March 1, 1961, less than three months after his inauguration, the new President signed an executive order creating the Peace Corps. This new and unique organization enlisted dedicated volunteers willing to carry their skills to the developing nations of the world.

In the years since the establishment of the Peace Corps, more than 100,000 Americans of all ages have lived in remote villages and towns around the globe. They have taught English, build bridges and schools, and engaged in thousands of other projects, all aimed at helping other people help themselves. Kennedy took great pride in the Peace Corps, and it stands today as one of the most meaningful and enduring legacies of his Presidency.

The historic mint stamp on this Panel features a Peace Corps poster design by David Battle. It was issued in 1972 to honor the Peace Corps. This panel was postmarked on March 1, 1961, the exact anniversary of the Peace Corps' establishment.
