President John F. Kennedy was killed by a sniper's bullet while riding in a motorcade through Dallas on November 22, 1963. The assassination shocked the nation and the world and forever changed the course of history.

Kennedy was visiting Texas in the hope of winning votes for the coming of Presidential election of 1964. His day had begun with a speech and breakfast in Ft Worth followed by a short flight to Dallas. Arrivingf in Dallas around 11:40, the Kennedys rode into the city in the back seat of an open Lincoln convertible. seated in the front seat were John Connally, the Governor of Texas, and his wife.

Friendly crowds lined the streets and cheer up as the Presidential limousine passed. Suddenly, when the car pass the Texas Schoolbook Depository, the crack of a rifle shot pierced the air. Another shot followed and then another. Both the president and Governor Connalley were hit by the bullets. The car was driven at high speed to Dallas' Parkland Hospital where a team of doctors and nurses worked feverishly to save the President. Their efforts were in vain, and, at about 1:00 PM, President Kennedy was pronounced dead. Governor Connally survived the shooting.

The assassin was later discovered to be the Lee Harvey Oswald, a one-time defector to the Soviet Union. As the nation and the world heard the news of the assassination, preparations were made to return Kennedy's body to Washington DC, and Vice President Lyndon Johnson was sworn in as the new President.
