With a roar of its mighty engines, the presidential jet departed from New York and headed out over the Atlantic Ocean. Arriving in Europe on May 31, 1931, President John F. Kennedy was bound for his first summit-meeting with Russian leader Nikita Khrushchev.

The European trip began with a stop in Paris where Kennedy met with French leader, Charles DeGaulle. Beautifully attired and fluent in French, Jacqueline Kennedy accompanied her husband on the historic journey. The First Lady's immense popularity with the French people heightened the trip's excitement.

After three days of talks in which Kennedy and DeGaulle gained a deeper understanding of one another, the president flew to Vienna for the all-important meeting with Khrushchev. He conferred with the Russian leader for two days, discussing a host of international problems from America's concern about Berlin to disarmament and a ban on nuclear testing. Kennedy concluded his trip with a stop in London and a meeting with Prime Minister Harold Macmillan.

Returning home, President Kennedy reported on the trip in a televised address to the nation. He explained that no major decisions had been made in Vienna, but he and Khrushchev explored their differences and open channels of communications. Although Kennedy considered the summit meeting "somber," he also felt it had been "immensely useful."

The historic mint stamp on this Panel depicts a torch held by two hands. It was issued in 1952 to salute the North American Treaty Organization. This Panel is postmarked May 31, the exact anniversary of the day John F. Kennedy departed for his European summit.
