On July 15, 1960, Senator John F. Kennedy deliver a stirring speech in the Los Angeles coliseum. After months of strenuous campaigning, he formerly accepted the Democratic party's nomination to run for the office of President of the United States.

Kennedy's acceptance speech marked the end of a dramatic and exciting week. When he arrived in Los Angeles for the opening of the Democratic convention, Kennedy knew he lacked enough committed delegates to clinch the nomination. Moreover, he faced worrisome challenges from Senator Lyndon Johnson and former Democratic presidential candidate, Adlai Stevenson. Kennedy feared his supporters might turn to one of his opponents if he failed to win the nomination on the first ballot.

Working virtually non-stop during the early part of that convention, the young Massachusetts Senator tryed to win over uncommitted delegates. When the roll-call of the states began, his hard work paid off handsomely. Shortly after 11:00 PM on July 13, the Wyoming delegation casts all its votes for Kennedy, giving him the majority of the votes needed for a satisfying first-ballet nomination. After briefly savoring his victory, Kennedy surprised the country by naming Lyndon Johnson as his running mate. It was a choice that measurably increase Kennedy's chances of winning the November election.

The historic mint stamp featured on this Panel honors Lyndon B. Johnson, Vice President during John F. Kennedy's presidency. It was issued in 1973. This Panel is postmarked July 15, the exact anniversary of John F Kennedy's acceptance of the Democratic nomination for the presidency.
