Approximately 70 million Americans turned on their television sets or radios on the evening of September 26, 1960, to hear John F Kennedy, the Democratic presidential candidate, debate Vice President Richard M. Nixon, the Republican candidate. The debate drew the largest campaign audience in history. The event, which took place at the television studio in Chicago, was one of the most important political debates since Abraham Lincoln argued the issue with Steven A. Douglas during their campaign for the U.S. Senate in 1858.

In a format agreed upon in advance, the candidates each made an opening statement, answered questions from a panel of journalists, and ended with a closing statement. The debate was the first of four, and the content was devoted to the United States domestic policy. Kennedy, who had prepared carefully for the event, appeared relaxed and well informed, and he gave fact-filled answers. Having served as Vice President for eight years, Nixon was familiar with the issues, and he also performed well.

In this first nationally televised presidential debate, Kennedy's campaign received an enormous boost. In one evening, millions of Americans viewed John Kennedy in action. Prior to the debate, the American public had known Nixon far better than Kennedy. Although the radio audience considered the debate to be a tie, many television viewers were captivated by Kennedy's on-camera charisma and presence and felt he won the debate.

The historic mint stamp on this Panel depicts the famous debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas during the 1858 Senate race in Illinois. It was issued in 1958 to mark the 100 anniversary of the debates. This Panel was postmarked in Chicago, Illinois on September 26, the exact anniversary of John F Kennedy's debate with Richard Nixon.
