John F. Kennedy felt that the 'health of the arts was virtually related to the help of society.' His commitment to the arts was evident from the very first days of his Presidency when he invited Robert Frost to read a poem at the inauguration.

Through John and Jacqueline Kennedy's inspiring efforts, the White House became a showcase for the best in artistic achievements. The President and First Lady hosted a series of illustrious dinners featuring performances by some of the world's most renowned musicians including cellist Pablo Casals and violinists Isaac Stern. Jacqueline Kennedy was also very involved in national cultural activities such as returning the White House to its historic splendor and arranging for the first American showing up of the Mona Lisa.

Beyond recognizing the nation's great artistic talents, President Kennedy wanted to "bolster the cultural resources of the nation." To help achieve his aim, he established the first governmental body to be specifically involved with the arts - the President's Advisory Council on the Arts. The President issued his executive order to create the council on June 12, 1963, after legislation to form such an advisory group was blocked. Some of the suggested areas of focus for the council included encouraging young people to develop their artistic gifts and considering the possibility of an arts exchange program with foreign countries.

Kennedy but firmly believe that creative excellence was the ultimate legacy for future generations of Americans. The observed, "I am certain...we will be remembered not for the victories or defeats...but for our contributions to the human spirit."

The historic stamp on this Panel was issued in 1974 above to honor Robert Frost who read a poem at JFK's inauguration. This Panel is postmarked in Washington, DC on June 12, the exact anniversary of the establishment of the President's Advisory Council on the Arts.
