New Englandβs rugged coastline is home to nearly 200 historic lighthouses and the brave legacy of the U.S. Life-Saving Service. These beacons and rescue stations protected sailors for centuries and tell powerful stories of maritime history, engineering, and heroism.
Established in 1878, the U.S. Life-Saving Service stationed surfmen along the coast who launched daring rescues in wooden boats through hurricane surf. They merged with the Revenue Cutter Service in 1915 to form the modern U.S. Coast Guard. Many of their original stations still stand as museums preserving that legacy.
