Day 1: South End – Upper, Middle, Lower Falls + Glen Iris Inn

πŸš— Morning: The Big Vistas & Waterfalls

8:30 AM – Park Entry (Castile Gate): Arriving early helps you beat the crowds and secure prime parking at the Upper Falls lot.
8:45 AM – Upper Falls & Horseshoe Bridge: Walk the paved path from the parking lot to the brink of the Upper Falls. You will see the active Norfolk Southern railroad bridge towering directly above the falls.
10:00 AM – Inspiration Point: Drive north from Upper Falls or hike a portion of the Gorge Trail (Trail 1) to Inspiration Point. This spot offers the most famous panoramic view of both the Upper and Middle Falls framed by the canyon walls.

🍽️ Midday: Grand Cascades & Historic Dining

11:30 AM – Middle Falls: Move your car to the Middle Falls/Glen Iris parking area. Middle Falls is the highest waterfall in the park (107 feet) and features a thunderous, mist-filled viewing area.
12:30 PM – Lunch at Glen Iris Inn: Walk right over to the historic inn. Securing a spot on the veranda/porch is first-come, first-served and highly sought after. If there is a wait, use this time to explore the William Pryor Letchworth Museum located right next door.

πŸ₯Ύ Afternoon: Deep Canyon Trek & Sunset

2:30 PM – Lower Falls (The 127 Steps): Drive north to the Lower Falls parking area. This is the most rugged of the three main falls. Descend the famous 127 stone steps to the Footbridge Trail. You will cross the river for a dramatic, close-up look at the roaring rapids and the plunge pool. (Note: The climb back up is strenuous; take your time).
5:30 PM – Archery Field Overlook: Head to this wide-open overlook. It offers sweeping views of the Genesee River winding through the canyon far below. It faces west-northwest, making it an excellent, serene spot to watch the sunset colors fill the sky.

🍿 Evening: Classic Retro Dinner & A Movie

7:00 PM – Dinner at Charcoal Corral: Drive about 15 minutes north of the Castile gate to Perry, NY. This spot is a retro paradise featuring a massive charcoal pit rotisserie, pizzeria, ice cream parlor, and mini-golf.
8:30 PM – Silver Lake Drive-In: Located right on the same grounds as the Charcoal Corral. Park your car, grab some popcorn, and enjoy a classic double-feature under the stars to wrap up an incredible day.

Day 2: Gorge Trail + Finger Lakes Trail Hiking

πŸŒ… Morning: Trail 1 Gorge Trail (7 Miles)The Route:

Start at the Letchworth State Park / Portageville Entrance. The official Gorge Trail (Trail 1) kicks off right by the spectacular active railroad bridge near Upper Falls.
What You'll See: You will track the canyon rim north for 7 miles, passing the Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls, followed by stunning vistas like Inspiration Point.
Logistics Note: This is a point-to-point trail. If you hike the full 7 miles, you will finish near the St. Helena / Center Road area. You will want to set up a two-car shuttle system or be prepared to have someone pick you up to bring you back to your vehicle.

β˜€οΈ Midday: Humphrey Nature Center & Parade Grounds

Humphrey Nature Center: Head back slightly south (via vehicle) to the nature center. It features excellent interactive environmental displays and acts as the gateway to the Autism Nature Trail.
Picnic at the Parade Grounds: The Parade Grounds picnic area is on the East Side of the river. To get there from the Nature Center, you must drive all the way back south, exit the Portageville gate, cross the river via Route 436, and re-enter the park's east rim road.
Alternative Idea: If you want to avoid a 25-minute drive just for lunch, stick to the west side and picnic at the pristine Lower Falls Picnic Area or the Wolf Creek Picnic Area instead!

🌲 Afternoon: Wolf Creek & Trout Pond

Wolf Creek (Trail 1 section): Located further north on the main West Side park road. The Wolf Creek area features a massive hairpin turn over a dramatic bridge, offering a view of Wolf Creek cascading straight down into the main Genesee River gorge.
Trout Pond (Trail 3): To find the tranquil Trout Pond Trail (Trail 3), head back down near the Visitor Center area. It is a short, easy loop (under 1 mile) around a quiet pond that provides a relaxing, shady break after your strenuous morning trek.
The Trail 6/7 Misconception: Be careful with the numbers! Trail 6 (Portage Trail) is a tiny 0.5-mile path down by the waterfalls, while Trail 7 (Genesee Valley Greenway) is a long, flat multi-use path. Sticking to the designated Wolf Creek overlooks and the Trail 3 Trout Pond loop will give you exactly the scenery you are looking for.

🍽️ Evening: Mount Morris Dining

After wrapping up your afternoon hikes, continue driving north along the main park road. You will exit through the Mount Morris gate right onto Main Street.
Questa Lasagna, Mt Morris, NY - An exceptional, upscale Italian cafe famous for its massive, rich, scratch-made lasagna layers. Perfect for replenishing your calories. Reservations are highly recommended.
High Banks Tavern, Mt Morris, NY - A cozy, casual local spot offering great craft beers, giant stuffed burgers, and excellent pub food.

Day 3: North End – Mt. Morris Dam & Hot Air Balloons

Morning: Mt. Morris Dam Exploration

9:45 AM: Arrive at the Mount Morris Dam and Recreation Area Visitor Center off State Route 408 to check in for your tour.
10:00 AM: Embark on the Ranger-Led Walking Tour. This steep 1-mile trek into the Genesee River Gorge takes you behind the scenes, where you'll take an elevator 200 feet into the dam structure and walk through its interior tunnels. 11:15 AM: Explore the Visitor Center exhibits to learn about the history of the dam, flood operations, and the geology of the gorge.

Midday: Hot Air Balloons & North End Trails

12:00 PM: Head to the Archery Field (a primary launch site) or the overlook areas to watch hot air balloons float over the gorge. If you are flying, check in with the launch crew at Balloons Over Letchworth, the exclusive outfitter operating inside the park.
1:00 PM: Enjoy a picnic lunch near the north end or hike the Highbanks Trail (Trail #20), which offers fantastic views of the lower canyon.

Afternoon: Genesee Valley Greenway & Departure

2:30 PM: Access the northern trailhead of the Genesee Valley Greenway State Park, located just south of the Letchworth State Park Mt Morris entrance. This flat, scenic path is perfect for a leisurely afternoon walk or bike ride along former canal routes.
4:30 PM: Conclude your day and exit the park via the Mt. Morris Entrance, conveniently located near NY-36 for your journey back home.

Letchworth Best Photo Spots & Sunrise/Sunset Times

Letchworth State Park is renowned as the "Grand Canyon of the East," offering stunning photography year-round. Fall foliage typically peaks between the second and fourth weeks of October. Capture sunrise at Inspiration Point, sunset at Middle Falls, and expansive canyon scenes at Great Bend.

Top Photo Spots

Inspiration Point: Located in the south end, this is the only overlook where you can see both the Upper and Middle falls simultaneously. It faces east, making it one of the best locations for watching the sunrise and the morning hot air balloon launches.
Middle Falls: This iconic 107-foot waterfall is stunning at sunset when the light illuminates the cascading water and the surrounding autumnal canopy.
Great Bend Overlook: Located south of the Castile entrance, this spot provides a breathtaking, sweeping panoramic view of one of the deepest, snaking sections of the Genesee River Gorge.

Sunrise & Sunset

Because the park's main gorge faces mostly east, sunrises are generally easier to capture across the various overlooks and the Parade Grounds entrance. For sunsets, seek out west-facing viewpoints. Trail 10 (Big Bend Trail) and the Parade Grounds offer exceptional sunset lighting and are great vantage points for evening balloon rides.

Fall Foliage Dates

Peak Time: Mid-October to late October. The colors usually reach maximum vibrance between October 15th and October 25th. Tips: The park's varied elevation means that color changes occur at different times. The south end (Upper/Middle Falls) peaks slightly earlier than the lower-elevation north end (Highbanks/Mount Morris Dam). Peak weekends are extremely crowded, so arriving on weekdays is highly recommended to avoid traffic.
