Pratts Falls Park
Nestled in the town of Pompey, just a short 20-minute drive from Syracuse in Onondaga County, Pratt’s Falls Park
offers a stunning escape into nature with its dramatic 137-foot waterfall as the centerpiece. This county park, officially opened to
the public on July 3, 1934, spans a compact area but packs in breathtaking scenery shaped by retreating glaciers thousands of years ago.
Beyond the falls, the park features picnic areas, restrooms, and shelters like the Falls Shelter, which can accommodate up to 100 people
and is available for rent from mid-May to mid-October. It’s an ideal spot for families, hikers, and photographers, with trails like the
Pratt’s Falls Overlook Trail Loop offering moderate loops through wooded terrain. Note that there’s a $5 vehicle entry fee, ensuring
the park remains well-maintained and less crowded than larger attractions.
Whether you’re seeking a peaceful picnic, a short hike, or simply the roar of cascading water, Pratt’s Falls Park
delivers an accessible slice of New York’s natural beauty. Plan your visit during fall for vibrant foliage or summer for fuller
flows—either way, it’s a refreshing retreat worth exploring.
Seasonal Events and Activities
Pratt’s Falls Park shines year-round with seasonal attractions and events that draw visitors in every weather.
In spring and fall, the park frequently hosts orienteering open houses organized by the Central New York Orienteering club, where
participants can try navigating permanent courses with free maps, borrowed compasses, and expert guidance—typically held in May and
October.
Autumn visits are particularly rewarding for the vibrant fall foliage framing the waterfall, making it a prime spot
for photographers and leaf-peepers.
Winter brings opportunities for peaceful snowy hikes, including community favorites like solstice or holiday treks,
with the frozen falls offering a serene, icy spectacle.
Additionally, programs like 4-H camps may include winter sessions with activities such as archery and orienteering.
The park also features archery facilities with Excelsior bales available for public use.
Beyond the falls, the park features picnic areas, restrooms, and shelters like the Falls Shelter, which can
accommodate up to 100 people and is available for rent from mid-May to mid-October. Camp Brockway, located within the park, is a
popular venue for private events such as weddings, graduations, and parties, bookable year-round for gatherings in a scenic setting.
