WNY Gorges, Nature Preserves & Overlooks

The Master Directory to Western New York's Hidden Shale Ravines, Canyons & Clifftop Trails

Western New York boasts a spectacular, wild terrain characterized by deep vertical shale cuts, massive roaring river canyons, and heavy hemlock-shaded forests. While standard state trails draw tourist crowds, our region holds hidden county gems, private land conservancy preserves, and pristine wilderness zones.

Instead of getting lost in fragmented regional web searches, check out our organized directory broken down into localized regions to plan your next western frontier day trip.

Gorge and creek trail conditions can fluctuate rapidly with rainfall. Please practice leave-no-trace outdoor ethics. Found an entry error or want to pitch a hidden preserve trail? Contact jim@syr-area.com.

πŸ’‘ Trip Planning Tip: Zoar Valley and Deer Lick Conservation Area are less than 15 minutes apart in Gowanda, making them perfect to combine into a single afternoon adventure!

⚠️ Safety & Terrain Note

Unlike the flat trails at Green Lakes or Delphi Falls, several Western NY locations (especially Zoar Valley and Eighteenmile Creek) feature high cliff drop-offs and slippery shale creek beds. Sturdy hiking boots or water shoes are highly recommended, and keeping an eye on local weather for sudden creek rises is a must.
